After a difficult year, Marc Jacobs is back at the top of his game and ready to take on the world. Here, the superdesigner sits down with supermodel and longtime friend Naomi Campbell

After a sweaty morning at the gym, Marc Jacobs strolls into a studio in Paris in June, looking buffed, bronzed, and, most astonishingly, bejeweled. "I'm really into this whole jewelry thing," the designer announces, outstretching a tanned arm stacked with gold-and-diamond bracelets. His right earlobe, blingless since the age of 20, now holds three diamonds the size of blueberries. "I feel like I'm going through a Donatella Versace phase," he says. The geek angst Marc Jacobs once channeled so effortlessly is nowhere in sight. His thick science-lab glasses and untended, greasy locks — the ingredients of his unstudied look of yore — have evaporated, leaving a closely shaven brown head whose angularity matches his whittled-down frame. A tight black tank top shows off a new set of sculpted shoulders. "It's not padding. It's not silicone," he says, slapping a flexed, tattooed bicep. "It's the real thing." Ironically, the 44-year-old designer, who so ferociously champions unsexy clothes, has never looked sexier. The jewelry, he insists, is just one of his latest healthy obsessions. "You just trade one addiction for another," he says drily as he saddles up for his biweekly haircut.

As everyone knows by now, Marc checked into rehab for drugs and alcohol — for the second time — this past March after the curtain fell at Louis Vuitton's fall show in Paris. But his physical transformation began well before that, a little more than a year ago, when he suffered from digestion problems. "I tried to cure it with medicine, but medicine was dangerous for me and had side effects," he explains. His nutritionist, Lindsey Duncan, put him on a healthy program of small, frequent meals laced with powerhouse mangosteen, goji, noni, and a?aí berries and an exercise program that has evolved into a three-hour daily habit in Paris and New York with a trainer he calls Easy. "At the beginning, I was sort of crying because it was so difficult to adhere to, but I was a very compliant patient." Exercise is now another of Marc's industry-sanctioned addictions. "I'm crabby if I don't do it," the designer says. "It's all those endorphins and adrenaline that I need. When my brain doesn't have them, it's like a withdrawal."

With this latest addiction, he has arguably the best body in the business. "I do not!" he objects, breaking into a grin. Well, then, who has a better one, Marc? "Naomi Campbell," he throws back. The one and only Miss Campbell is, in fact, sitting right next to Marc in the smoke-filled makeup room they're sharing. "Where are my Haribos?" the supermodel wails, searching in vain for her package of gummy candies. Fellow fashion star and rehab survivor Naomi, 37, is one of Marc's oldest friends in the business.
